Taogaea is found!
Mood:  lucky
Topic: Surprise
Who is Taogaea and why do I care? Or why should you care?

Taogaea was the signature used by the artist Eddie Powell during the 1970's when he was perfecting his early works known as contrast art. For those of you who really know me and my family or if you have checked out my Photo Links and looked at my house pictures from California, you'll note that I have a small Eddie Powell collection from his Taogaea period. My mother and father still have two of the larger paintings, 'After a wall in Venice' and 'Spencer Tracy', respectively. I have 'The Marx Brothers', 'Laurel & Hardy', 'WC Fields', Tahoe Trees, and an unnamed portrait of a lady who I currently believe is Nancy Sinatra. Eddie Powell did portraits for Elvis, Ms. Barbara S. herself, and Tom Jones to name a few notables.

So, needless to say, I am excited. I am not about to part with these paintings, not a chance. I'd like to know what they are worth, and I should definately get them on my insurance with special notes that I have an Eddie Powell collection.

Check out Taogaea - Eddie Powell's Website This has information on his life and his recent Surrealistic works.

To say I am surprised that I finally found him is an understatement. I have been looking since I got an internet connection in 1997. Thank you Ebay and thank you Google. I would never have reconnected to the artist without your lovely sites.

*bounce bounce* Perhaps I should change my mood to excited instead of surprised?

Hello ... I just sold CHARLYE an original signed Taogaea. It was done around 1970 along with two others depicting CHARIE CHAPLIN, one of which hung at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and the other at the Comedy Club in L.A.

FYI ... I googlized about three years ago and found a Colorado gallery which used to handle Eddie Powell. They had a list of celebs who commissioned Powell. Among them: Flip Wilson, Glen Cambell, Mac Davis and many more. Lately, I have not been able to locate the page. Sorry. Just thought I would give you an update whilst still trying to find that page. Kindest thoughts, Rod Miller

i had the luck of purchasing a taogaea picture at a resale shop in florida where i live. it is titled parakeets. i was just wondering if you ever found out what your paintings are worth? i seen this particular painting a year before i bought it and didn't purchase because it had a tear. it does not interfere with painting as it is on a solid background. i think it could easily be repaired. tried powells email but unable to accept. i guess i will try phone number. there is a painting of his for sale on antiquesrow.com for $8000.

any ways peace,

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten my paintings appraised, yet. I need to find someone who can appraise them which means loading them into the Pathfinder and hauling them in to Wichita or Kansas City as I am in a really rural area.

When I do find out, I will post an update to this blog. Thanks for the info about that other painting - $8,000! Who knew?

I to have an Eddie Powell pic from his Taogaea days.

It's a large unamed painting.
It looks alot like a mother and her two kids after the holocaust.
I call it Momma and the kids.....
We have had this for well over twenty five years, alas my wife has made me place it in the garage a few years ago.
Nice to see interest.
Cheers,
Alex

You mention your parent have an Eddie Powell painting titled 'After a wall in Venice'.  I have owned this painting since the early 80's.  What is the canvas size of your parent's painting?

The painting is about four feet or so tall and about three feet wide. I don't have the exact measurements as it is Redondo Beach, CA with my mother, and I'm in Wellington, Kansas with my yardstick.

The paiting features a fluffy/curly haired flapper style woman, kind of half turning around, looking over her shoulder with a contemplative look. At the bottom of the painting is a sidewalk, and an orangish/red fire hydrant. Most of the painting is colors of tan, browns, and such, but the lady looks like she is outlined, for lack of a better term, like a cartoon character is outlined, in black. If I remember correctly it is in a brown maple wood colored frame with a gold trim.

There was a book published in the 1970's about the murals in Venice Beach, California -where I grew up. My mother still has the book. This flapper style lady was on a wall very near the beach and there was a fire hydrant on the sidewalk next to this building she was on. It looks as though a picture was taken of her and then the negative reversed, because the painting has the lady and the fire hydrant facing the opposite direction.

I need to ask my mother if she can find that book and scan a copy of that page along with taking a photo of the painting. Beside the Marx Brothers and Spencer Tracy it is my favorite painting by Eddie Powell.

Thanks for your post. Check back later some time and I'll try to get a picture of the painting up on the site.

Hi Barry,

I emailed my mother about the painting "After a wall in Venice" and she sent me a photo. I'll put it in my photo album on Page 4. Follow the link and it should get you to the photo album.
